Just finish building this new Mini PC out with M2 256 GB NVMe flash drive, and 32 GB of DDR4 memory installed. Yes, you can install 2 16 GB memory cards in this unit. Install a spare 250 GB SSD drive as well, but be warn that you will need to remove the rear USB port module to install the ribbon connector to the circuit board. Not too bad, but leave it to someone who has install ribbon connectors before. The performance is incredible with true 4096 x 2160 display resolution over HDMI or DisplayPort. Attached some photos with the memory and M2 flash installed.
|☆☆☆☆| Great Mini PC
I would give this 5 stars if the seller were more informative about the product. I had to research it on the Asus website to really get the full specs.
Setup is definitely not for beginners, as you will need to load the USB 3.0 drivers separately when doing a windows installation (at least for win 7). I also recommend downloading the latest Intel drivers, particularly for the integrated graphics.
I have been buying Asus products for a while now, and they are reasonably priced and quite good. Would definitely recommend this PC for video streaming, conferencing or general office apps.
|☆☆☆| RAM and HD drive are not included.
I decided to change the raiting of the product, since it is of very good quality, the pc has a good cooling system, the processor temperature is always at 43c to 47c.
The only complaint I have so far is that they should explain better that the product do not have the Ram or the HDD. In addition to Barebone specify that it does not have these components since not all know the terminology of Barebone.
|☆| Looks great online… But, the reality was quite messier than it should have been. Also, ASUS Support is disgustingly lacking
OK… I got a lemon (VivoMini VC65R-G039M). I get that. When I spent over an hour removing and replacing SEVENTEEN (That’s 17) screws just to install the memory and SSDs… only to push the power button – for nothing to happen. No beeps. No video, No access to BIOS settings, no keyboard lights… nothing. I started having flashbacks to the older i3 VivoMinis that were PLAGUED by this problem…
But, being a good little computer geek, I assumed it was the memory. But, I bought the same Crucial DDR3L kit that many other purchasers had recommended. So, I thought maybe I didn’t quite get the SO-DIMMs in quite right… So… SEVENTEEN (That’s 17) screws later, I am checking the memory (looked fine), removing it, and reinserting them in opposite slots… Put everything back together (This time with only one EVO850 SSD connected)… Press the power button… No beeps. No video, No access to BIOS settings, no keyboard lights… nothing!
Took the unit to a local electronics technician for a benching… After about ten minutes, he tells me that the BIOS IS BLANK! Not just “No CMOS data”, but the BIOS is BLANK… devoid of code… a wasteland of empty bits.
In the interim, I contacted ASUS support – via email. And, all I can say about that is; What a worthless bunch of nothing that was… After telling them specifically what you see above, they send back an emal that says “We understand that your Vivo Notebook will not charge properly…” WHAT?!?
Thank goodness for Amazon’s return policy. I will never buy parts from anywhere else ever again. And, never without the Amazon A-Z guarantee. Cause ASUS was NOT going to make this right. That much was obvious.
Now, I DO have MANY ASUS parts and several of their monitors. And, generally am quite pleased with them. But, Thank goodness I purchased here this time. Because, I you ever had to contact ASUS support. You would be banging your head against a brick wall (which is an insult to brick walls everywhere) But, WHAT an eye-opening experience it was.
Yes, I know I just got a lemon… unlucky, right? So, I am re-ordering the same unit. I really love the combination of features, and the ability to use FOUR disk RAID on a mini PC (How freakin’ cool is that?). If things work out better next time, I MIGHT… “might”… update this review.
I just felt someone needed to provide some balanced perspective on this unit. Cause you have to know… If something goes sideways, ASUS will do nothing. And, this non-booting issue has been a problem with the VivoMini line-up for quite some time… Yet, ASUS STILL hasn’t got it sorted.
Pending receipt of a new unit…
EDIT: The new unit arrived a few weeks ago. The setup went well with 16GB of Crucial DDR3L1600 SODIMMs and two Samsung EVO840-500GB SSDs… I installed Ubuntu Linux (Latest Version) and THAT is where the trouble started… This system locks up at least three times, and sometimes many more times every day… I thought maybe I got some bad memory. So, I replaced it with brand new Crucial SODIMMs… Still the system locked up several times a day/ OK… maybe the SSDs are defective… So, I removed them, and installed a brand new WD RED 1TB… and reinstalled with Windows 8.1 And, Linux 16.04… Windows did a bit better. But, it still locks up several times a day… All requiring a hard reboot.
I have fought this for weeks now… And, searched for answers… I even made TRIPLE sure my BIOS version was the latest. (It is). I refuse to deal with the inept and clueless ASUS support. So, I guess I will just have to return this one too. And, give up once and for all on ASUS products.
BEWARE of this product line… They are NOT solid. And, ASUS will not be the source of anything good, as far as support goes.
